The person we’re looking for:

We’re after an experienced, commercial, client services executive who will lead and inspire clients, develop integrated content, communications and publishing programs, and direct internal teams to deliver outstanding work.

Coming from a background with 10+ years in media, marketing, publishing or communications – client or agency-side – you will be a strategist and a doer with an in-depth understanding of agency processes and an ability to juggle and prioritise competing demands. You will also have a talent for leading teams.

If you have experience in publishing and media sales, all the better.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will also have a role in guiding the overall strategy and direction of the business.

Business Director (Communications)


Mahlab launched its communications business at the end of last year, and it’s been going gangbusters. We have a range of fantastic clients, a team of four and we’re growing fast. We’re now on the hunt for a talented communications director to spearhead our next phase of growth.

In this 12 month contract role you will lead the team responsible for integrated communications programs for existing clients and new prospects. You will work with the broader Mahlab team of editors, digital experts, creatives and strategists to deliver outstanding results and ensure that we maintain strong client relationships.

You will be excited about driving an audience-first approach to communications across all channels. This role will initially work alongside the Head of Communications to deliver outstanding work and drive the business forward.

It will then lead the communications team while the Head of Communications is on maternity leave for six months.  This role will start as a 12-month contract but has the potential to become permanent.

What you’ll do

  • Lead, manage and grow a portfolio of clients simultaneously, often juggling various projects and deadlines.
  • Lead a team of four communications, PR and social media professionals to develop and deliver integrated communications programs.
  • Present proposals to new and existing clients.
  • Manage ongoing deliverables to ensure our work is successfully delivering on the goals set and agreed with the client.
  • Use your skills to push clients and the agency, creatively and strategically.
  • Inform clients about best practices in communications and content marketing.
  • Play an instrumental role in ensuring we have systems and processes that serve our clients and business well.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • The role will involve immersing yourself in a diverse range of motivated clients, driving the strategic growth of multi-platform content programs
  • Bringing your collaboration skills to the role you will be driving the strategy for each client through the management and direction of editorial, design, distribution, PR and advertising
  • Your creative mind and professional manner will ensure you deliver enlightening and educative planning and review meetings, as well as develop and present killer briefs to clients

Key Requirements

  • Commercial acumen and the ability to plan and strategise at a senior level in a team environment
  • Strategic and creative flair – showing initiative in creating and developing new ideas for our valued clients
  • Experience in developing and maintaining diverse key relationships at a senior level
  • Good negotiation skills with the diplomacy to maintain long-standing relationships
  • Digital, social and content focused – understanding of digital platforms
  • Understanding of content marketing, multi-channel brand development or new product development
  • Editorial empathy and a good understanding of how brands communicate with their audience
